about

One night Billy and Muddy Roues were on their way home from a gig and were listening to an album called Mama Says I'm Crazy (on Fat Possum Records) which was comprised of field recordings of Mississippi Fred McDowall and Johnny C. Wood. The sound of that music became almost hypnotic as the early light of dawn painted the night sky a deep blue over the Hudson River as they drove across the TZ Bridge. Inspired by the driving rhythm and deep slide acoustic guitar of McDowall and the chugging harp of Woods Billy created this homage to the source sound of the North Mississippi Hill Country Blues. The song tells the story of that now fabled recording session, which the Roues Brothers highly recommend you check out.

This is the first single of a full length album called Keep Pushing Buttons Til Something Happens. We hope this will keep you coming back for more.

lyrics

Let’s Go Find Johnny

Stranger went to Como
North Mississippi town
Tried to track down Fred McDowell
He was lookin’ all around
Found him workin’ at a gas station
Said, ‘I wanna cut some vinyl on you’
Fred looked the stranger in the eye
Said, ‘Here’s what we gotta do,
Let’s go find Jonny! (Let’s go find Johnny!)
Gotta go find Jonny! (Johnny C Wood!)
Let’s go find Jonny! (Let’s go find Johnny!)
We’ll be shakin’ em on down real good
Shake em way down low

Well it was Mississippi Fred and
Johnny, Johnny C Wood
Drinkin’ that moonshine whiskey
Still Shakin’ em on down real good
Fred said, ‘if you come to my house
And you don’t find me around
Know I’m somewhere with my baby
We’ll be shakin’ em on down real good
Shake em way down low

Said ‘put your knees together
Let your backbone move’
Ain’t nobody in this world
Shake em’ down like these two
When Fred said to a stranger
Here’s what we gotta do
Head on down that old dirt road
If you wanna hear these Hill Country Blues (Chorus)
